If you follow my Instagram (If you don’t…. you should!) you’ll know that over the last couple of years I’ve become a massive fan of Marks & Spencer. Their sizing is generous and the quality of their clothing is genuinely brilliant. I’ve been championing them a while now because I love the feel and fit of their clothing. So I’m OBVIOUSLY over the moon that we’re working with M&S this month on trying out their summer clothing collection. That’s right, not just me, but the boys too. This summer is the first that we’re a proper family of four and I plan on making the most of it. So, in true plus size girl form, here are my top tips on feeling confident this summer.
Wear What You Want
This might sound obvious. But where what you want. Forget fashion rules, ignore dress sizes and absolutely refuse to acknowledge what anyone else thinks of you. It’s all about how you feel. If you feel fabulous in what you’re wearing, that’s all that matters. This gorgeous pure cotton summer dress from Marks & Spencer is a size 24, if I didn’t give it a try, I would have assumed it wouldn’t fit. Because buttons aren’t usually a curvy girl’s best friend. But it fits like a dream.
It’s more than likely you’ll feel a whole load more confident if you’re comfortable. There’s nothing worse than pulling down a dress that keeps riding up or having to adjust a top that keeps digging in. Give in to the temptation of being comfortable in what you’re wearing. Try different cuts and sizes. Think about the materials you’re wearing. Yes, you’re going to sweat – it’s summer! This dress is 100% cotton, so it feels like amazing quality but is also super light and airy. There’s no space for sticky spots around here thank you very much!
This dress has a shirred waist so not only does it do the flattering fit and flare thing, but it’s also stretchy. So running after the kids, sitting for lunch or just walking the beach is going to be comfortable.
Let’s just say It how it is. Thighs rub together. It’s a fact of life. Don’t feel bad about it, it happens to people of all shapes and sizes. To combat it, a simple pair of lightweight stretchy shorts will do. Under this dress, I’m actually wearing some Marks & Spencer cotton rich shorts under this dress. They’re lightweight, comfortable, don’t fall down and they’re only £5. Sorted. (The shorts are also available in black and almond.)
Sometimes by adding a couple of accessories to an outfit, it gives it the final nudge from being just good to great. I love this little straw cross body bag, also from M&S. It’s lightweight, super on trend but really just gives the white dress a little extra punch. It also draws attention to the bag – meaning less attention on the bits you’re not so confident about. The same goes for statement earrings (a fave option of mine) and a bold lip!
So, this is a tough one. I know that people don’t have the money to just spend on clothes absentmindedly. Well, I don’t anyway! But if there was one thing I could tell my younger self, it would be to stop buying loads of rubbish clothes that don’t fit properly but are cheap and instead, save your pennies, sell your old clothes and buy something which will stand the test of time. I’m not talking £100’s! I’m talking spending £30 or £40 on a dress that makes you feel wonderful! This Marks & Spencer dress makes me feel like I’m walking on air when I wear it. Everything about it just feels great and in turn- I feel great. I know that dropping £40 on a dress isn’t easy for some. So like I said, hang tight on the other spending, sell your old bits and treat yourself. A dress like this will make you feel amazing ALL summer… not just this year… next year too! Get yourself something you’ll wear on repeat and you’ll actually end up getting so much more for your money.
