I moved from London to Nottingham almost three years ago and I still surprise myself that I actually did it! Being a London girl, born and bred, the thought of living in any other city was laughable! But when our landlord decided to sell up, we were left at a cross road. Stay in London, on the hamster wheel of life being broke and stuck with no space, or make the move of a lifetime, up sticks and move to Nottingham! So we went for the life change and moved to Nottingham! We had to hire a large removal van from a man and a van hire because we had to literally move everything. I thought it was going to cost a LOT of money. We were moving over 120 miles and there was lot’s to be done. But when you move to a new house, there always has to be a budget right? So I tried to save money where I could. So what is the key to saving money when you hire a man and van service?

DIY
Firstly, do as much as you can yourself. The quotes you get from removal companies will take into account any unassembly and assembly that needs to be done and the time it takes to do them. Take your own feet off your armchairs, unscrew your own headboards and unassemble anything that you’re happy to assemble again when you get to the other end. It will reduce the quote because you’ll be reducing the time needed for the job.
Move it
If you’re fortunate to have a car or someone who is willing to drive you to your new home and back a few times, aim to move as much of your personal items as possible. Things like clothes, small ornaments, pots, pans and plants! Anything that you can’t break, and you can carry, do it yourself before the removal team get in. The less you give them to do, the less you’ll have to pay.
They Move it
On the other hand, to flip over the coin, you can actually save money if you hire a large removal van from a man and a van hire service. If you hire a large van and manage to get everything in there in one go, you won’t have to fork out petrol or travel expenses for any additional trips. Plus, what’s more, it can be so much more stress-free to just get the entire job done in one go, at one time. Super easy, one full day and you’re moved!

Proper Team
Sometimes, you have to spend more to save more. What I mean by this is make sure you’re paying for a decent removals company. You need a company that’s reliable, professional and on point. The last thing you want is having to fork out extra money for lost or damaged items. A professional team will have you covered.
You’ll always find little ways to cut back when it comes to moving. I’m glad we opted for a big van to move everything at once, but we still took a few personal things in the car so we had some bits ready for when we got to the new house without having to unbox our entire life in 3 minutes! (Top tip – make sure you take the kettle and tea bags with you!)
